Pop singer aaron carter
is the latest star to sign up for U.S. TV series CELEBRITY REHAB, following his arrest for marijuana possession earlier this year
The 20-year-old former child star has recorded seven albums and made appearances on television and Broadway since making his singing debut at age seven.
But his recent years have been plagued by substance abuse problems which have caused his career to stall. He's hoping a public detox treatment will launch him back into the limelight.
A source tells , "Aaron has a terrible marijuana problem, and he's no longer being offered much work. At least by appearing on VH1, he will be back in the spotlight and get used to being in front of the camera again. And hopefully he can get sober at the same time.
"He made good money as a teenager, and when he turned 18, he got access to $2.7 million (GBP1.35 million) - before he knew it, it quickly was being whittled away."
Carter will join a cast including former Hollywood Madame Heidi Fleiss and rocker Sebastian Bach on the upcoming series.
The singer and his older Backstreet Boy brother, Nick, appeared in 2006 reality show House of Carters in a similar bid to revive their flailing careers.
